GA4 tracking spec: common questions
What is a GA4 tracking spec?
A tracking plan that lists the events your site sends to Google Analytics 4, when each one fires, its parameters, which ones are key events, and how to test them, so developers and marketers implement tracking the same way.
Which GA4 event should count as a lead?
Google’s recommended event is generate_lead, fired only after a successful form submission. Mark it as a key event in GA4 Admin → Events.
Do I need Google Tag Manager?
No. The spec supports both Google Tag Manager and gtag.js and adapts the developer notes to your setup.
How do I test GA4 events?
Use GTM Preview or the Google Analytics Debugger with Admin → DebugView, and follow the checklist included in the spec.
